Review Summary

The Lamaze Freddie the Firefly toy for babies is award-winning, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s great for sensory play - jam-packed full of different sounds, colours and textures that our baby loves interacting with. It’s also really convenient to bring around with it’s circular hook. We’ve brought it out for car and plane rides to keep our baby distracted and it has generally worked quite well.

Features of the toy

The Lamaze Freddie the Firefly toy has heaps for babies to play with and discover. I was pleasantly impressed with how much they’ve managed to include in the one toy.

  • Bright colours and patterns
  • Various textiles and textures for baby to feel
  • Has a squeaker
  • Ladybug teether attached with a pocket to hold it in
  • Knotted firefly feet for added textile stimulation
  • Mirror with flap
  • Rings that make sounds when hit together
  • Rattle within the toy’s body

It has won the What To Expect Moms Love It Award (2015) and World of Kids Toys Award in 2018. It also has more than 13,000 5-star reviews on Amazon, so I’m not the only one raving about it.

Lamaze has also come up with a pink version of Freddie the Firefly called Fifi the Firefly with a different colour scheme - great if your little one loves pink.

What I love about it

A big reason why I’m a huge fan of the Lamaze Freddie the Firefly toy is that I can see how my baby interacts with it differently as he develops and learns new skills.

We bought this toy when he was about a month old and he was mostly fixated on the black and white patterns on the back of the wings.

As he grew older, he started being able to interact with it more, grabbing the wings that make crinkly noises when you touch them. I can see how he will discover more features of Freddie the Firefly as his dexterity develops even further.

The two rings at the bottom of the toy have been really great with my little one learning how to grasp onto things. We’ve used it to ease him into rolling from front to back and vice versa by getting him to hold onto the rings and gently shifting his center of gravity. The rings have also doubled up as a teether that he loves chewing on.

It’s also small enough to be brought out with us. We brought it on the plane and attached it to our nappy bag. While it didn’t keep him preoccupied for the whole flight, it did help for parts of the flight, which is already an accomplishment! We actually ended up leaving it in the plane by accident and bought a replacement because our son loves playing with it so much.

Despite its portable size, it’s still of a decent size to include many great features. Compared to similar toys like the Playgro Activity Friend Blossom Butterfly where it feels like it’s a bit too small, the Lamaze Freddie the Firefly is big enough for the many features it has and for its parts to be of a decent size for small hands to grab.

What’s not great about it

The one thing that I don’t like about it is the fact that it needs to be hand washed. I struggle with having enough time to do general household chores like putting the washing machine on, so handwashing baby toys is something I don’t really have time for.

My workaround for this is cleaning the plastic parts like the rings and teether with wipes regularly to keep it clean since those tend to go in my baby’s mouth. My partner then washes the whole toy every now and again.

Final thoughts

The Lamaze Freddie the Firefly toy is well worth purchasing in my books. I can definitely see how it could take my baby from 0 months up until they’re 24 months as per the manufacturer’s age recommendation for the toy.

There are features of the toy that my baby is still discovering, a few months after being introduced to it for the first time. When it comes to toys for babies, I’m a huge fan of getting good-quality toys and games that can evolve in interactivity with my baby as he grows and this one checks that box.
